The "waving range" of the head is just right the range of its feeding mark. When looking at the leaf mine made by the larva, it's clearly that some veinlets are not consumed by the larva. Moore, F. 1866. </span>List of lepidopterous insects collected at Takow, Formosa, by Mr. Robert Swinhoe. <span style="font-style: italic;">Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;">1866</span>(2): 355–365. 而這篇文章也被某些台灣的自然史研究者認為是有關台灣產昆蟲的第一篇科學記述<span style="font-weight: bold;">(註一)</span>. 在這篇文章中, Moore與Wallace記載了Swinhoe採自打狗(Takow)的鱗翅類昆蟲, 其中包含五個蝶類的新種: <span style="font-style: italic;">Pieris formosana</span> Wallace (=<span style="font-style: italic;">Appias lyncida formosana</span>) (台灣粉蝶), <span style="font-style: italic;">Euploea swinhoei</span> (=<span style="font-style: italic;">Euploea sylvester swinhoei</span>) (斯氏紫斑蝶), <span style="font-style: italic;">Terias vagans </span>Wallace (=<span style="font-style: italic;">Eurema laeta punctissima</span> (Matsumura, 1909)) (端黑黃蝶) <span style="font-weight: bold;">(註二)</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Pontia niobe</span> Wallace (=<span style="font-style: italic;">Leptosia nina niobe</span>) (黑點粉蝶)與<span style="font-style: italic;">Lycaena nisa</span> Wallace (=<span style="font-style: italic;">Famegana alsulus</span> (Herrich-Schaffer, 1869)) (台灣姬小灰蝶, 黑星姬小灰蝶<span style="font-weight: bold;">) (註三)</span>. 在這五種採自"打狗"的蝴蝶中, 端黑黃蝶在柴山是否存在有待調查, 因為鑑定困難的黃蝶基本上很難吸引蝶類愛好者的留意, 而我們對於過去在這個地區所進行調查結果的黃蝶屬鑑定都抱持懷疑的態度. 而黑星姬小灰蝶則除了採自雲林的一筆記錄之外在台灣完全消失. 由於Robert Swinhoe送給Wallace的標本在後來被轉賣給<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Chapman_Hewitson">William Chapman Hewitson</a>, 一位富有的英籍昆蟲收藏家, 而Hewitson在整理這批標本時更換了標籤導致標本認證的困難, 這些標本即始在<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Forsell_Kirby">William Forsell Kirby</a>在Hewitson身後整理其收藏所著的名錄C<a href="http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/9121">atalogue of the collection of diurnal Lepidoptera formed by the late William Chapman Hewitson, of Otlands, Walton-on Thames; Wileman (1860-1929)在台灣的昆蟲學發展史上絕對是一位重要的人物. 然而我們對他的瞭解是非常有限的. 我們只知道他的姓被冠在數種鱗翅類昆蟲上, 例如韋氏麻斑粉蝶(<a href="http://nc.kl.edu.tw/bbs/showthread.php?t=7207"><span style="font-style: italic;">Delias weilmani</span></a>)與偉塔波紋蛾(<a href="http://catalog.digitalarchives.tw/dacs5/System/Exhibition/Detail.jsp?OID=3303407"><span style="font-style: italic;">Takapsestis weilmaniella</span></a>), 也知道他曾經出任大英帝國於日本, 台灣與菲律賓的外交公職. 然而有關他是一個怎麼樣的人, 他在駐日, 駐台與駐菲期間的博物學活動之間的關聯與對台灣與東亞的昆蟲學的影響, 在大多數的文獻上並沒有被提及. 吳永華先生所著的一系列台灣自然史書籍僅對日籍學者在台灣的活動有著較深入的探索, 而對西方學者在台灣活動的歷史探索則停止於1900年之前, 因此Wileman自然就僅僅是一個看似有名, 但卻謎樣的人物. 本計畫除了將把Wileman在20世紀出採自台灣的鱗翅目標本進行數位化之外, 也將儘可能由文獻中找尋Wileman的身影, 以漸漸拼湊出這位連肖像都沒有的人物.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;font-size:85%;" >首先我們從任教於<a href="http://www.kyutech.ac.jp/top/index.asp">九州工業大學</a>的<a href="http://www.dhs.kyutech.ac.jp/%7Eruxton/">Ian Ruxton</a>於2007年編輯的英國外交特使<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Mason_Satow">Sir Ernest Satow</a>(漢字名: 薩道義)於1895-1906年間出使日本與中國的半官方信函(The Semi-Official Letters of British Envoy Sir Ernest Satow from Japan and China (1895-1906))中找到了有關Alfred Ernest Wileman的描述. 在這本書中, Wileman的名字開始出現於1896年6月30日的信件中. 信的主旨為英帝國駐日業務人選問題, 信中亦提及台灣淡水的情況, 而Wileman與另一位"Layard"<span style="font-weight: bold;">(註一)</span>皆為被考慮的人選, 但Wileman似乎並非Satow所認為適合的人選. 在1898年2月24日的信中, Satow特別提到Wileman事實上是一位"浮譟的傢伙"(fighty creature), 從這封信開始, Ruxton開始說明Wileman出始日本的經過. Wileman是在1882年7月4日被任命為實習翻譯員(student interpreter), 從1892年7月7日到1894年10月29日期間則擔任代理日文秘書, 從1894年的10月30日至1896年的3月31日期間則為日本首相辦公室助理; 在1896年4月1日到1897年2月21日則為代理法院常務官. 在1896年12月28日被提跋成為神戶與兵庫的副領事, 並駐在神戶. 隨後他在1901年4月1日調至北海道的函館成為副領事. 1903年5月21日, Wileman第一次調至台灣, 駐於台南直至1907年他再被調至橫濱任總領事為止. 1908年6月1日Wileman本來將被調至夏威夷的Honolulu但未成行. 於1911年時Wileman獲得加冕勳章(Coronation Medal), 隨後於1914年10月24日退休. 然而此書中並未提及Wileman第二次來台的行程.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">註一:</span> 英帝國在同一時期於錫蘭(斯里蘭卡)民政機構服務的<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Leopold_Layard">Edgar Leopold Layard</a>為著名的鳥類學者, 其姓氏亦被用以命名數種鱗翅目昆蟲, 如拉氏大簑蛾<span style="font-style: italic;">Eumeta layardi </span>Moore, 1855. 但這位Layard與派註日本兵庫領事R de B M Layard並無關聯.<br /></span></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3427827431135038563-2166458569803852521?l=digileps-2.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>Absenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11679992499358698322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3427827431135038563.post-57356811066260257092009-08-25T07:45:00.001-07:002009-08-25T10:11:34.539-07:00<div style="text-align: justify;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7PD10If-KW8/SpQXnk2Bd2I/AAAAAAAAEGc/D5PhDnCuvbc/s1600-h/DSC_7929.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7PD10If-KW8/SpQXnk2Bd2I/AAAAAAAAEGc/D5PhDnCuvbc/s400/DSC_7929.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373946224032446306" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family: arial;font-size:85%;" >鱗翅目昆蟲(Lepidoptera)為昆蟲綱之第二大目，也是各型植被與生態系中最重要的植食性昆蟲(herbivorous insects)之一，無論在博物典藏、科普教育、生態保育與生物多樣性研究上皆有舉足輕重的角色。根據最新之研究結果，臺灣產鱗翅類昆蟲至少有近5000種。由於鱗翅群是各項生物資源、博物館收藏以及公眾展示中的要角，因此我們選擇這個類群以及其寄主植物進行其標本與文獻之數位化工作，並藉由網際網路的便利性與科技達到維護收藏品質、促進科學研究以及普及大眾科學教育的目的。本研究延續過去三年的計畫(見<a href="http://digileps.biology.nsysu.edu.tw/digilep_alpha/public/zh/index.php">digileps</a>網頁與<a href="http://digileps.blogspot.com/">blog</a>)對台灣產大鱗翅類昆蟲的標本典藏進行數位化工作，而此新計畫的特點在於數位化對象為典藏於<a href="http://www2.nsysu.edu.tw/biology/">國立中山大學生物科學系</a>之鱗翅類昆蟲及其寄主植物標本，尤其是潛葉性物種所造成的潛痕標本。此外我們也將以英國於清帝國時期駐台領事Alfred E. Wileman在台灣南部的博物學活動歷史為主軸，對他所留下的有關20世紀初台灣南部博物學活動的歷史與典藏進行數位化工作與探查。<br /><br />據台灣一般自然史書籍指稱, 韋爾曼(Alfred E. Wileman)原為英國駐日領事，他於1903年首次到台灣擔任英國駐清帝國領事，其駐在地點即為目前已成為咖啡館的「打狗英國領事館」。Wileman於台灣停留期間為1903-1912年，期間他多次至阿里山、關仔嶺、大塔山等地採集昆蟲標本。Wileman事實上在台灣的鱗翅類昆蟲研究史上是一位非常重要的人物，然而他的生平與採自台灣的藏品卻鮮少被台灣的博物學史工作者所提及。韋爾曼在1908至1930年間於倫敦皇家昆蟲學會陸續發表了數十篇有關台灣蛾類的科學論文。許多的論文則是他離開台灣至馬尼拉履新，之後回到倫敦後撰寫的。此外韋爾曼曾在高雄柴山地區(也就是當年所稱的Takao，或音譯為打狗)採集大量的標本。這些標本之中有許多物種現在已不復見(例如齒斑草蛾<span style="font-style: italic;">Ethmia dentata</span>)，或其分布仍僅限於柴山地區。我們在過去的數位典藏計畫中即已針對Wileman當年送回倫敦的標本進行模式標本與重要引證標本的數位化，而我們相信若能將韋氏在20世紀初所採集的標本與近年於柴山所採集的標本以數位化方式呈現，不但可對物種與生態系的變遷進行初步的瞭解，也能協助大眾與研究者瞭解台灣南部於西方博物學者早期對台灣自然環境探索的歷程。<br /></span></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3427827431135038563-5735681106626025709?l=digileps-2.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>Absenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11679992499358698322noreply@blogger.com0
